How forming departures, deposits and refunds work
Confirmed and ready to book

A green confirmed label means this departure is set to run and you can book your place. We will not cancel it because too few people join. Only exceptional safety, legal or other events beyond our reasonable control could require a change or cancellation. If we cancel before the trek starts, you can choose another available date or receive a full refund of what you paid for the trek.

A clear decision for forming departures

We confirm or cancel a forming departure no later than 3 days before its scheduled start. If we cannot run it and you do not want another available date, we refund 100% of what you paid for that trek booking. If you cancel before our decision, our normal traveler cancellation terms apply.

Open a new departure

Booking for two or more? Ask us about opening a new date. We can promote it to other trekkers. We may also offer a semi-private option at a price agreed with you in advance. A requested date is confirmed only when we confirm it in writing.

A committed group

For bookings made more than 15 days ahead, the deposit is 50% and the balance is due 15 days before departure. Bookings accepted within 15 days require full payment when booked.

Today

Our 4-day Huayhuash trek begins with an early departure from Huaraz toward Queropalca, on the eastern side of the Cordillera Huayhuash. The road journey passes traditional Andean communities, cultivated valleys, and increasingly remote mountain scenery.

We begin hiking near Queropalca at 3,844 meters. The trail follows a gradually rising valley, giving the group time to establish a comfortable pace while adapting to the altitude.

As we approach Laguna Carhuacocha, the landscape opens toward some of the most impressive mountains in the range. Yerupajá, Siula Grande, and Jirishanca rise above the valley, creating a dramatic introduction to trekking in the Cordillera Huayhuash.

We reach Carhuacocha camp at 4,157 meters. Our Andes Treks team prepares camp and a warm meal while you rest beside the lake and recover before the following day’s higher excursion.

Day 2

Carhuacocha – Laguna Siulacocha – Mirador Tres Lagunas – Carhuacocha

Distance 12.6 km | 7.8 miles
Time hiking 4–4.5 hours

Route map for day 2: Carhuacocha – Laguna Siulacocha – Mirador Tres Lagunas – Carhuacocha

Today

We wake beside Laguna Carhuacocha with early views of the glaciers and summits reflected across the water. After breakfast, we leave the main camping equipment behind and carry lighter daypacks into the glacial valley.

The route climbs toward the Siulacocha basin, passing turquoise mountain lakes, waterfalls, moraine ridges, and ice-covered slopes. Yerupajá and Siula Grande remain directly ahead as we gain altitude.

Our principal objective is Mirador Tres Lagunas at 4,534 meters. From this natural viewpoint, three differently colored lakes appear beneath hanging glaciers and steep mountain walls. It is one of the defining panoramas of the Huayhuash range.

The terrain near the viewpoint can be uneven, so our guide maintains a controlled pace and allows time for rest and photography. We then complete the loop back to Carhuacocha for a second night beside the lake.

Day 3

Carhuacocha – Punta Carhuac – Janca (Mitucocha)

Distance 9.1 km | 5.7 miles
Time hiking 5–5.5 hours
Elevation gain 458 m | 1,503 ft
Elevation loss 382 m | 1,253 ft
Camp altitude Janca: 4,232 m | 13,885 ft
Difficulty Challenging
Route map for day 3: Carhuacocha – Punta Carhuac – Janca (Mitucocha)

Today

After breakfast, we leave Carhuacocha and climb away from the lake through open puna grasslands. Small streams and broad mountain slopes accompany the first part of the ascent.

The path continues steadily toward Punta Carhuac. Looking back, we see Carhuacocha below the eastern faces of Yerupajá and Siula Grande, while the distinctive summit of Jirishanca becomes increasingly prominent.

We reach Punta Carhuac at 4,618 meters. The pass provides a wide view across the northern Cordillera Huayhuash and marks the highest point of today’s route.

From the pass, we descend toward the Mitucocha basin and our camp at Janca. The Andes Treks team establishes camp at 4,232 meters beneath Jirishanca and Rondoy, positioning us close to the final crossing of the trek.

Day 4

Janca (Mitucocha) – Punta Cacanan – Cuartelhuain – Huaraz

Distance Hike: 7.9 km | 4.9 miles; drive: approximately 162 km | 100.7 miles
Time hiking 3–3.5 hours, plus approximately 6 hours by road
Elevation gain 461 m | 1,512 ft
Elevation loss 537 m | 1,762 ft
Camp altitude No overnight camp
Difficulty Moderate
Route map for day 4: Janca (Mitucocha) – Punta Cacanan – Cuartelhuain – Huaraz

Today

Our final morning begins in the Mitucocha basin. We cross the high grasslands north of Jirishanca and start a progressive ascent toward the last mountain pass of the itinerary.

The trail reaches Punta Cacanan at 4,667 meters, the highest point of the 4-day Huayhuash trek. From the pass, we can look back across the valleys and summits explored during the previous stages.

After a short break, we descend through open puna toward Cuartelhuain. The lower trail becomes gentler as we approach the northern road access, creating a steady conclusion to this compact Huayhuash adventure.

The recorded hiking route finishes at Cuartelhuain at 4,154 meters. Here, we meet the vehicle and begin the return journey to Huaraz. The driving distance is separate from the hiking distance listed for this day.

Distances, hiking times, routes and arrival times are estimates. Your guide may adjust the itinerary due to weather, trail conditions, safety considerations or the needs of the group.
